Island Park

Evergreen–shaded Island Park Campground sits on West Tensleep Creek and is within five miles of West Tensleep Lake and trail heads for the Cloud Peak Wilderness, thus offering rich opportunities for the trout fisherman, canoeist, hiker, horseback rider, and off-roader. No-wake Meadowlark Lake is 7 miles distant, and just east of it is an abandoned fire lookout that provides the hiker with a scenic platform for looking into the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Moose frequent the campground.

THINGS TO KNOW

Getting Here:
Highway 14A, from Lovell, is extremely steep, a 10-percent grade and more, is winding, has several hairpin turns, and many blind corners. This is a challenging road during the summer season.
Weather:
You are at high elevations here in the Bighorn Mountains. Remember to bring warming clothing for evenings as it can become chilly.
Don't Move Firewood: 
Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site.

Driving Directions:

Drive 21 miles northeast of Ten Sleep, Wyoming, on US Highway 16; then go 3 miles north on FSR 27. From Buffalo, Wyoming, travel west 42 miles on US Hwy 16 to FSR 27 (at Deer Haven Lodge), turn right onto FSR 27 and go 3 miles north to campground.

Camping Info

Extra Car Fee: $9.00

Two non-towed vehicles may be parked per site. The first vehicle is included in the basic fee; the second vehicle is charged an extra fee collected at the campground.

Firewood: $6.00/bundle

Firewood bundles can be purchased from the campground host.

CLIMATE

TEMPERATURES
Spring temperatures range from 60°-70° F for the highs and 30°-45° F for the lows. Summer highs are in the 70°-80° F range with the lows reaching into the 40° F range.
RAINFALL
Most rain comes in May and June but come prepared for showers as they can happen all summer long.
SNOWFALL
Snow should be out of the mountains by early to mid May and shouldn't come around again until late September.
